How to poop in the woods (cat hole guide)

Let's be honest: needing to poop in the woods is an inevitable part of backcountry adventures. Doing it responsibly isn't just about modesty; it's critical for protecting fragile ecosystems, preventing water pollution, avoiding wildlife conflicts, and ensuring a pleasant experience for future visitors. Mastering the cathole method is the gold standard for Leave No Trace wilderness sanitation. This detailed guide goes beyond the basics to ensure you handle your business ethically and effectively.

Why Catholes Matter (Beyond Embarrassment):

  • Water Protection: Human waste contains harmful pathogens (like E. coli and Giardia). Burying it properly prevents contamination of streams, lakes, and groundwater sources – your drinking water!
  • Disease Prevention: Proper burial minimizes the spread of illness to other humans and wildlife.
  • Aesthetics & Experience: No one wants to stumble upon used toilet paper or uncovered waste. It ruins the wilderness experience.
  • Decomposition: Waste buried 6-8 inches deep in rich, organic soil decomposes fastest thanks to soil microbes. Surface waste or shallow burial decomposes slowly or attracts animals.
  • Respecting Wildlife: Unburied waste or food-contaminated poop attracts animals, altering their natural behavior and creating dangerous encounters.

Essential Gear (Don't Leave Home Without It):

  1. The Trowel: This is non-negotiable. A sturdy, lightweight backpacking trowel (metal like aluminum or titanium is best) is required to dig a proper hole. Sticks or heels rarely suffice. Choose one with comfortable grip and measurement markings.
  2. Toilet Paper & Waste Bag:TP: Use plain, white, non-perfumed, biodegradable toilet paper sparingly. Crucially: Pack it ALL out. Never bury it.Waste Bag System: Use dedicated, opaque, sealable bags (like ziplock freezer bags). Double-bagging or using specialized WAG Bags (Waste Alleviation and Gelling) is excellent practice, especially in arid regions, sensitive alpine zones, or popular areas. WAG Bags contain gelling agents and deodorizers and are designed for pack-out.
  3. Hand Sanitizer: Alcohol-based (60%+ alcohol) sanitizer is essential for hygiene after handling TP/waste bags and before handling food. Soap and water 200+ ft from water is better if feasible.

The Step-by-Step Cathole Method:

  1. Location, Location, Location (The 200-Foot Rule):Distance: Get at least 200 feet (approximately 70 adult paces) away from any water source (streams, rivers, lakes, springs, seeps), trails, campsites, and climbing routes. Uphill from water is best.Soil Type: Choose a site with deep, rich, organic soil (dark and loamy). This soil has the most active microbes for decomposition. Avoid rocky, sandy (deserts), or hard-packed soil where digging is impossible or decomposition is slow. If in a group, spread out catholes widely.Sun Exposure: If possible, choose a sunny spot. Sunlight helps break down waste faster.Privacy: Find a spot with natural screening (bushes, trees, rocks).
  2. Dig the Hole:Use your trowel to dig a hole 6 to 8 inches deep (about the length of your trowel blade) and 4-6 inches wide. The depth is crucial for decomposition and odor control.Pile the excavated soil neatly beside the hole.
  3. Do Your Business:Position yourself securely (practice your squat!). Aim directly into the hole.
  4. Manage Your TP & Hygiene Products:Pack it Out! This is the most violated but critical rule. Place all used toilet paper, wipes (even "biodegradable" ones!), tampons, pads, and panty liners immediately into your dedicated waste bag. Seal it tightly. Biodegradable items take years to decompose in the wild and are unsightly.Alternatives (Use with Caution): If you absolutely cannot pack out TP, smooth stones, snow, or broad, non-toxic leaves (like large maple or oak – know your plants!) can be used gently. Never use poison ivy/oak! This is generally less comfortable and hygienic than packing out TP.
  5. Bury Completely:Carefully fill the hole with the original dirt you dug out. Pack it down slightly with your foot.Disguise the Site: Scatter leaves, twigs, pine needles, or rocks naturally over the spot to make it invisible and discourage animals from digging. Replace any duff layer you disturbed.
  6. Sanitize:Apply hand sanitizer thoroughly after handling your waste bag and trowel, and before handling any food or your water bottle.

Pro Tips & Special Situations:

  • Dig BEFORE It's Urgent: Find your spot and dig your hole at the first sign of needing to go. Panic digging leads to poor choices.
  • The "Desert/Snow/High-Use Area" Exception: In extremely arid environments (where decomposition takes years), alpine zones above treeline, canyons, or heavily trafficked areas (like popular river corridors), packing out ALL solid human waste in WAG Bags is often mandatory and always the most responsible choice. Check regulations for your specific area!
  • Group Trips: Coordinate cathole locations widely dispersed. Consider a dedicated "poop trowel" and waste bag system for the group.
  • Winter/Snow: Dig through the snow to the soil if possible. If soil is inaccessible, pack it out (WAG Bag). Waste on top of snow melts into water sources later.
  • Urine: While less critical, urinate on rocks, gravel, or pine needles well away from water sources and trails to minimize smell and impact on vegetation (animals are attracted to salt). Dilute with water if possible.

The Leave No Trace Ethic:

Proper cathole use is fundamental to Leave No Trace Principle #3: Dispose of Waste Properly. It’s a direct act of respect for the land, water, wildlife, and fellow adventurers. By taking the time to do it right, you actively preserve the wild character and health of the places you love to explore. Embrace the cathole – it's your essential tool for keeping the backcountry wild and wonderful for everyone. Remember: Dig Deep, Pack Out TP, and Leave No Trace!
